Buy Local!
I know you have heard the phrase “buy local.” It basically means to buy products and services as close to you as possible. One reason is to cut down on the cost of transportation, thus putting a dent in green house gases. There is always a debate on if it really save energy, I believe it does. I mean why get tomatoes from Chile if I can get them from the Rio Grand Valley? There is also better control of the quality of the product.
We see an example of problems with quality with drywall that is being produced in China. There have been numerous claims of problems with off gassing from drywall produced in China. If the drywall had been produced locally it would be easy to trace the source of any problems associated with it.
It may sometimes cost more to buy locally but it can also be cheaper in the long run. Local producers will pay more attention to the local market; they have a bigger stake in maintaining a good reputation and working relationship with the local community.
A home that is built with a true green philosophy will use as much local material in the building of the home as possible.
